I've read some of the stuff when I read John Barth's "Chimera" (1972).
He has written a very good essay about the topic of framed narratives
in his "The Friday Book" (1984): "Tales Within Tales Within Tales"
(pp. 218-238):
„Derjenige, der den Mann, der den Pfahl, der auf der Brücke, der auf
dem Weg, der nach Worms führt, liegt, steht, umgeworfen hat, anzeigt,
bekommt eine Belohnung."
"Whoever the man who the post which on the bridge which on the road
which to Worms
goes, lies, stood, knocked over, identifies, gets a reward." (Barth,
TFB, p. 235)
There's another essay in TFB, entitled "Don't Count on It. A Note on
the Number of the 1001 Nights" (pp. 258-281).
