On Wallace. Infinite Jest can be a chore. It is also a work of genius. It is
of course a personal journey that one embarks upon when tackling this.
A few salient points.
Hal is such a great character. Anyone who has smoked dope can empathise.
The love of language and all its permutations is evident.
Its OK to be smart, but it comes with a cost.
I think it dates very well. While little cameras above your PC have been
available for years and now internet phone lines are available, who is
taking this tech. up. His take on the videophone is surely one of the most
astute observations of contemporary culture ever written, and extremely
funny.
I read this at the right time for me. It spoke a language that just
resonated. Thats all you can ask from a book.
