The as-yet-unidentified marking on the cover is
actually a solar cell that produces electricity for a
small reading lamp installed, Byron the Bulb style, at
the upper edge of the inside front cover of Against
the Day.

FWIW, my take is that Pynchon has been working on this
material for a long time, and that, in some ways and
in some contexts, some chunks of what he's written
over the years could have wound up in just about any
of the novels, at least after V. and perhaps TCOL49.
ATD returns to Henry Adams' Chicago; I think by the
time he finished V. if not before P had a glimpse of a
large literary tapestry that encompasses GR, V, M&D,
and ATD, and I think he's been working on it ever
since.

Also, for the record, I'm still expecting some kind of
book for younger readers. Can't imagine a writer like
Pynchon having a child growing up in the house without
writing some stories for him.
