The fatwa was against Rushdie is still in effect;  in fact,  it was 
renewed a year or so ago.   But Rushdie is more or less ignoring it 
now.   He spent about a decade in hiding in London and at some point 
in the very late 1990s or early 2000s  started making appearances in 
New York and London.  The appearances simply became more frequent 
(but really,  appearing at a NY fashion show? - might be a great 
scene in a future novel - I can see it).   He married the latest 
beauty in 2004 and from all accounts is very happy now.
