Contemporary Fiction

Another thought on contemporary literature that harks back to some previous
discussion on the p-list. When talking about 'contemporary literature', for
the most part the names of American writers are mentioned. Those are
followed by the British writers and those translated into English. I don't
think I will make a great discovery if I tell you that there is a whole
literary universe outside the English language. There are great works
(offhand: 'Saga/Fuga de J.B. by Torrente Ballester, 'Zettels Traum' by Arno
Schmidt) that have not been translated into English. So I guess the more
reading languages one possesses, the more optimistic he or she should be
about the contemporary literary process.
