Aye, well that's a more complicated matter. Perhaps one of our US
readers might venture a guess? I suppose there's a hard core of
stupid/evil/bloody-minded who'd always vote Republican, no matter what,
then there's a group who never would, and in between there are
'waverers' and someone in Bush's (or Rove's) position needs to persuade
enough of those waverers to waver on over to the Dark Side......

And of course, going back to the original question, enough people might
have voted to make it close enough, what with the shenanigans down in
sunny Florida, so that the Supreme Court got to chose. But that was
then, the question was 'if everybody hates Bush how come he became the
president?', well I suppose a lot more people hate him now, having seen
how things turned out.

Having said all that, it would seem that there were still enough
non-Bush haters in 2004 to get him back in. English singer songwriter
Thea Gilmore was interviewed on the radio recently, she'd been touring
with Joan Baez during the 2004 US elections, and she said she hardly met
anyone who intended voting for Bush, everybody hated him, and she
thought Kerry would get in no problem. Then on Election day, Gilmore
said, "...everybody comes down from the hills and votes Bush".
Depressing stuff.

I was in New York in June 2004, and overheard two huge black guys
chatting while they were unloading a truck in Times Square. I was just
in time to hear one of them saying, "Kerry? John Kerry? I'd want to see
how he handled another terrorist attack before I thought about voting
for him!"

Maybe Pynchon will be asked about all this when he goes on the
promotional tour for ATD?

Cheers
JC
