NP means Not Pynchon related.

Ten or more years ago people would sometimes complain if stuff posted  
to the p-list wasn't all that important, relevant, well thought out,  
concisely stated, etc.

Had something to do the need not to waste  peoples time (also with   
limited band-width, use limitations on one's connection, but that was  
neither here nor there).

Obviously today anything goes.
