When did it all start?

I don't recall much discord previous to when Siegal dropped in and used
P-List discussions for his Lineland book. Trusts as well as the whole
Pynch-fan vs. Pynch-Lit divide were put to the test.

I am a relative newcomer to the P-list, but browsing in the archives reveals

deep enmity between some participants, people calling each other names and
really hating one another. That's just plain curiosity and if it's none of
my god-damn business, tell me so (I know, some will), but when did this all
start? Was there enmity in the list from the very beginning, some ancient
feud among different irreconcilable clans of Pynchon interpretators. As for
me, heated argument and bantering are all right, but sometimes people DO get

personal here. Can I be trusted with the deep secret of love and hate on the

P-list? I did not notice such violent reactions on the DFW list by the way.
