When did it all start?

There is no need of 'stirring things up', it happens almost every week here. 
I was just curious how can one tell whether it's a sock-puppet or a real 
human being. Maybe there are none and it's all a conspiracy theory? Maybe 
I'm gonna be attacked by one, and, in that case, need to know how to defend 
myself?

OK, seriously, that was just an ironic and rather rhetorical question. It's 
just fascinating what grown-up and serious people sometimes can do in the 
cyberspace.
