I did read it - it's one of the many tidbits available in full on
williamgaddis.org

At the time?  It's critics in general, not critics at the time.
Gaddis pretty much called exactly what was going to happen in The
Recognitions itself, including a couple of editors discoursing about
this huge book that they weren't going to bother to read and what a
bitch it was to carry around.
