Obscure/out-of-print books that my mother gave me -- popular books in Communist Party circles of the 30's and 40's, I guess:
1.The Thibaults and Summer 1914 by Roger Martin du Gard (Nobel Prize winner)
2. Europa and Europa in Limbo by Robert Briffault (a British sociologist. The paperback version of the first book has a lurid depiction of a scene from the novel in which a decadent ex-pat Russian prince has a haughty Jewish baroness stripped and flogged for the titillation of his dinner guests).
Both of these describe the lead-up to WWI and the war years. I'm re-reading them now.
3. Temptation by John Pen (a pen name for Hans Szekaly (sp?), a Hungarian-American lefty who, under the name John Toldy, won an Oscar for the screenplay of Arise My Love, a 40's movie starring Claudette Colbert). A fantastic book about poverty, socialism and the rise of fascism in pre-WWII Hungary.
