Saunders feels smarter

"I don't really know what it means yet," Saunders said. "But it sure is
nice. I feel smarter already."
One thing is certain: He won't have to work quite so hard to augment his
professor's salary with speaking engagements and freelance magazine
articles.
"I never do anything just for the money, but sometimes you think, 'Well,
this will add a little, this will add a little.' And pretty soon you look up
and you're just kind of spending a lot of time putting a living together,"
Saunders said. "One of our daughters is in college now, and the other one's
on the way. . . . I think what (the grant) does is, it says, 'OK, you can
relax a little bit.' "
It also will free him up to pursue a long-gestating project: his first
novel. "
