I don't expect bearhugs from any authors, not even Pynchon, but a punch in 
the gut or a swift kick in the nuts once in a while would not be amiss. I 
don't know whether DeLillo aims for our guts or our nuts (does he even know 
where they are?), but he's certainly never hit mine.
