It's worth asking the question. Joyce, Proust, Musil,
and, of course, Cervantes hit it perhaps most
concentratedly. Then you have, say, Austen, Melville,
Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Flaubert, Conrad, Nabokov,
Pynchon, Garcia Marquez up through Balzac, Dickens,
James. And there's something to be said for
consistency, longevity, even ...
