i wonder if Mr DeLillo would've been a better essayist--all those ideas or
musings on culture and the modern world lack poetry but would fit nicely in
that form.

I think what seperates Pynchon from many a fiction writer is his poetic
abilities. it's like many of these mainstream scribblers have had this big
beautiful rock slowly chipped down to shavings from all these writer
workshops and academic back and forth.
