Maybe Jethro?

 I gotta ask....
         If _V._ was published in 1963 and the Beverly Hillbillies premiered in 1962,  does anybody think that the character of Jethro Bodine and his behavior  could have inspired the naming of Pynchon's omnipresent sailor?   If Pynchon is reputed to have been fond of _The Brady Bunch_ TV show, it does not seem completely out of the question.  One has to consider the possibility that a young man may have entertained a certain fascination with Ellie Mae as well.  Ginger and Mary Anne yet to come?
