Powers' Goldbug Variations is a worthwhile read, but like most writers (such as DeLillo) that lard their novels with big ideas, the text isn't cooked enough to incorporate the ideas, which should moisten and inform the meat of the novel rather than greasily smear on your teeth like a bad metaphor in the sun.
