   "Well, and keep in mind where those Masonic
Mysteries came from in the first place. (Check out

   Pynchon enthüllt hier die wahre literarische
Quelle, die seinem (und Robert Anton Wilsons) Wissen
über die Illuminaten zugrunde liegt:

   "Someone once said that beneath or behind all
political and cultural warfare lies a struggle between
secret societies.”
   Ishmael Reed: Mumbo Jumbo (1972), Atheneum, New
York 1988, p. 18. 

   Reeds Roman, bis heute unübersetzt, ist als
selbstreflexiver Text ein massiver Angriff auf die
Grundlagen der westlichen Zivilisation im Sinne der
Postmoderne. Als Afro-amerikanischer Autor
dekonstruiert Reed meisterhaft den kulturellen
Überlegenheitsmythos des Abendlandes. Er weist
beispielsweise nach, daß die Odyssee letztlich eine
verkappte Coverversion des altägyptischen
Osiris-Mythos ist, daß schon Homer abgeschrieben hat,
und zwar von Afrikanern. Seine Hauptstossrichtung aber
gilt dem ungerechten Gesellschaftssystem der USA:

   "It occured to me that I was borrowing from all of
these systems: Religion, Philosophy, Music, Science
and even Painting, and building 1 of my own composed
of their elements. (
) I had patched something
together out of my own procedure and the way I taught
myself became my style, my art, my process. (
) This
country is eclectic. The architecture the people the
music the writing."  ibid p. 38. 

   Viele von Reeds Themen und Bilder tauchen bei
Pynchon wieder auf, aber sein Einfluß ist noch
weitreichender und reicht bis in die Gegenwart, in der
sich Amerika nur ungern seiner dunklen Seiten
erinnert, weshalb Martin Scorceses Film Gangs of New
York in den Kinos wohl gefloppt ist.

   Reed erinnert daran, daß (wie der Film beworben
wird) „Amerika auf den Strassen geboren” wurde, daß
der Krieg zwischen hermetischen Zirkeln schon immer zu
Amerika gehört hat:

   “New York is accustomed to gang warfare. White
gangs: the Plug Uglies, the Blood Tubs of Baltimore,
the Schuylkill Rangers from Philadelphia, the Dead
Rabbits from the Bowery, the Roaches Guard and the Cow
Bay Gangs terrorize the city, loot, raid and regularly
fight the bulls to a standoff.” ibid p. 18
