Perhaps because of the time elapsed (lingustically,
scientifically, socioculturally, geopolitically, et
al.), Pynchon's deployment of (chronotopicaly) local
color is perhaps simply more obvious in M&D and AtD. 
But as Wesinberger showed and as, say, This Here List
continues to establish, even such incidental elements
as the BBC programs playing in the background in GR
tend to be well researched.  GR's WWII settings just
aren't as removed from our own, though I'm sure there
are elements tehreof we've all had to look up ...
