Ghost (and Thanatoids) have a sort-of conscience burdening aspect in
Pynchon's writing.  They may have an oppressing aspect if the subject
they're dealing with is resistant to their messages.  Or they may have
an enlightening effect, bringing a wayward character back to his/her
senses (as we'll see later on in AtD).
