Cf the personification of the city as a "weeping widow" etc, "developing
into the meanest, cruellest bitch of a city ..." (153-154). In particular,
note the consequences of "that terrible all-night rape, when 'he' was forced
to submit, surrendering, inadmissibly, blindly feminine, into the Hellfire
embrace of 'her' beloved". The Empire strikes back: the creature's 'arrival'
replicates the arrival of the exhibits, so-called, put on display (then
abandoned) at the Chicago Fair.
