This is still pretty light-weight, funny and with no particular
tension of it's own until mid 163. First Kit and Dittany
conveniently find each other in the stables for a little s&m and
regroup later under a palmetto tent.

Edwarda is "The Diva of Delmonico's."

Delmonico's was a famous steak house in New York which opened in
1827, changed locations several times and by 1898 had two
restaurants, one at No. 2 South William Street and a new one (The
Citadel) on the northeast corner of Fifth Avenue and 44th Street.

The Citadel allowed smoking in the dining room, and an orchestra
played in the background instead of as a show. The architecture and
grandeur were top-notch and celebrities were often seen dining there.
One of the restaurants closed in 1917 the other in 1923.

There have been other restaurants called Delmonico's but according to
Wikipedia <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delmonico's_Restaurant>
which gives sources and names other restaurants, the original is
long gone. <http://www.steakperfection.com/delmonico/History.html>

162:6 - smell of hemp and opium

Opium was legal in the US until 1905

as was marijuana until the individual states banned it - mostly in
the 1920s.

These substances could generally be purchased over-the-counter in pharmacies.

163:11 - "...whereupon his other or co-conscious mind would emerge at
last to see what it could do"

his own *co-conscious* mind?

The Freudian unconscious, and the Jungian subconscious, were once
supplemented by the co-conscious: "(psychology) A dissociated mental
state coexisting with a person's consciousness, but without his
awareness, though it is psychodynamically active and may account for
various normal and abnormal mental phenomena.

???? (but none of the other samples have walls - only roofs. )
Not a lot of palmetto in New York but it could be imported - or grown
in a green-house.
Whatever - they met up for 10 minutes in tent made out of these fronds:
