Seems a stretch; that they're out "in the bush" (and the absurdity of a 
newspaper for such a venue) seems enough of a gag

Perhaps setting up an echo for the book's last page? "For every wish to
come true would mean that in the known Creation, good unsought and un-
compensated would have evolved somehow, to become at least more access-
ible to us."

I vote for the last two. The Gilded Age was a particularly good time to 
watch the entertaining show of new money trying its damnedest to look 
old, not least by sneering at still newer money.
