        Paul Nightingale:
Reference to "Butch Cassidy's gang" (172) and untrustworthy
"eyewitnesses" confirm the mythical status of this West. Both
"Dr Lombroso" and "[t]heorisers about the recently discovered
subconscious mind" feature as attempts to colonise this West
on behalf of science, a form of detective work that stands in
opposition to Lew's own practice. Indeed, the wording here
("recently discovered ...") emphasises the function of Freud
        et al as explorers.

"Dr Lombroso" figures heavily in Vineland:

        p. 197 "Xanthocroid looks"
Thomas Henry Huxley (1825-1895) classified mankind into types,
according to physical appearance. Xanthochroi, one of his classes,
is a subdivision of the Leiotrichi, or smooth- haired type, having
yellow or light-colored hair and a pale complexion. This is the
prevailing type in Northern Europe. Aryan. Either Pynchon, his editor,
or his typesetter has dropped the "h" in "chroi."

        p. 272 "Cesare Lombroso"
Detailed exposition of the Italian criminologist's theories show Brock's
(or, more precisely, Pynchon's) fascination with them. "...crude in
method and long superseded, although it seemed reasonable to
Brock." Or any other fascist with a bent toward genocide. Most of
this stuff probably comes from the 1911 translation of Lombroso's
Criminal Man, or the 1911 biography by H.G. Kurella.
