Speaking of British writers rebelling against Tolkien...
Sue Townsend slagged off Tolkien pretty good in the most recent
(and last?: at the end he says "happy people don't
keep diaries, and I'm happy now") of the <classic> <wonderful>
Adrian Mole books, Adrian Mole and the Weapons of Mass Destruction.
Neither Mieville nor Tolkien is as much fun to read as Sue Townsend.
Though I did manage to finish Tolkien's trilogy in one go,
as a kid, but haven't been able to slug my way to daylight
in the Mieville one yet.
However I think they both need to bow to Michael Moorcock
(and ya gotta love that name) in slagging off Tolkien.
Please see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epic_Pooh
(I reserve the right to like all the above writers, including Tolkien)
