In a spirit of scientific inquiry I once tried sticking a pin in between the 
words 'the' and 'middle' in that quote, and the book balanced just 
perfectly! (And that's why there are no blurbs and no author photo on the 
back cover of the first edition: the additional ink would make the book keel 
over.)
