FT: Pynchon fans and scholars have a reputation for being among the most
pretentious and aloof in academia. What was the reception like for the work
from the Pynchon community?

ZS: The reception, actually, among the literary community was better than in
the art community. To be perfectly honest, the feeling I got was that they
pretended they had read Pynchon but really hadn’t, and didn’t want to
discuss it too much to expose that. The literary people were great; like
most Pynchon fans, they were just glad someone else had read the book.
