and, to layer on a patina of paranoia, perhaps at the _behest_ of 
Nate - after Lew stalks out, how easy would it be for Nate to
use the office phone and call his other employee (Kieselguhr)
(cui bono from all this dynamiting, after all: detective agencies!)
to meet Lew and buy him a beer and fix his face in memory...
