Now isn't that a classic scene: a daughter/wife/sister is absent for a while
and comes home with a wad of banknotes. Just off the top of my head: 'The
Soft Touch' novella in McGuigan's 'Acid House'. However I would say Pynchon
does throw in a dollop of ambiguity about Lake's whoring.
