I liked Waterworld. The Road Warrior at sea. Bonus
points for all the villains being smokers, not to
mention Dennis Hopper (and even though Jeanne
Tripplehorn is just above Catherine Keener on my list
of Actresses who Generally Ruin Movies for Me) ...

I hated it because it (a) gutted the novel, which I
quite liked (environemnatl collapse isn't quite
nuclear holocaust) and (b) it was boring,
excrutiatingly so. The straight up godawful parts
((c) Will Patton) are simply painful, not funny at
all, too far and few between all the sheer ennui to
sustain any sort of interest, at least on my part.
How "so bad it's good" can anything be for three hours
at a time?
I saw it AND Titanic back to back on their shared
opening day (i've also sat throgh Solaris and Stalker
consecutively, but that's an entirely different
thing), and vastly preferred Titanic ...
But do see Brin's intro to the current ed. of Alas,
Babylon, which he--and maybe even I share this with
him, and you--appreciates precisely for its
afirmative, redemptive tone ...
