Oh, the math works fine -- you could even make a case that evolution 
perks along faster -- *if* you're prepared to accept all the cultural 
corollaries that go with harems and numerous mateless/childless males.

Walruses, lions, roe deer and such make it work. IMHO it doesn't look 
good on us.
