mine school - This would be the Colorado School of Mines in Golden,
founded in 1870 or 1873 depending on how you reckon -- and is still
there today. Plenty of info via:

    http://www.mines.edu

metallurgy - once upon a time a thing unto itself, but now a subset
of materials science that studies the properties of metallic elements
and the compounds that can be formed with them, intermetallics and
alloys -- basically the study of what can be done with most of the
stuff that is mined...stuff that is not fuel, like coal

Castle Rock - its current claim to fame is location, halfway between
Denver and Colorado Springs; I dont' know anything about an amusement
park there

200: vegetarian restaurants - I haven't discovered how many of these
might have been around at the time, either back east or in San
Franicisco -- The American Vegetarian Society was founded in 1850 in
Philadelphia, and I have the sense that a lot of the
Transcendentalists early into Buddhism were also into this -- I'm
sure there's a whole world to be explored here

saltflats - just wondering if there's a reason that this is one word
here instead of the usual two
