[654.10-13] ... though everybody liked to talk about the Code of the West as
if it really existed and you could borrow a copy from the local library when
you needed to check on details.

Also Gunther's disdain for Ways American, on 600:
"Pistols! Oh, no, no, impulsive, violent Mr Traverse--here we do not duel to
kill, no! though of course wishing to maintain the honor of the Verbindung
one's deeper intent is, upon the face of the other, to inscribe one's mark,
so that a man may then bear for all to see evidence of his personal
bravery."
Hence:

were private and less likely to be talked about.
