Hello
I realized an achilles heel in my theory of Charles Stearns being an
ancestor of Charlotte Stearns Eliot. See *end for more Stearns info.

Joseph C Pynchon 1815-1889 wrote a tract: _A reply to Charles Stearns'
'statement of facts' : in connection with the petition of the Springfield
Aqueduct Co. for an addition to their act of incorporation_ about the
Aqueduct incident.

Joseph C was son of William 1776- m.wife Esther Billings Pynchon 1781-1878
and his brothers, Daniel P 1816 Grocer-and father of George Mallory Pynchon
Sr 1862-, William 1820 Farmer, John P 1824- Schoolchild, and their sisters,
Sara 1813-, & Emily 1822- were raised in a large Springfield family steeped
in colonial traditions. He wrote this of a man named Charles Stearns
(Pynchon v Stearns) who is listed in the bib as being Stearns, Charles,
1788-1860. So. Anyway just for fun here's more... I will show you next how
the George Mallory Sr and Jr AND TRP IV are related.

Joseph C Pynchon Aqueduct text's Dad Daniel P (Grocer) is the son of
William Pynchon 1776-, the named Pynchon married to Susan in the Aqueduct
case. William aqueduct case's father was William Jr 1740-1808 (called
Gentleman) Pynchon who married his father's sister's son --married his 1st
cousin- Lucy Harris. William Jr Gentleman's father was William 1703-1783
who was married to Sarah Bliss. William 1703-1783's father was Colonel
John (Trader) 1674-1742 and his mother was Bathshua Taylor who was the only
sister of 5 girls not to marry a Reverend.. she died at 27 after bearing
Colonel John (Trader) 6 kids. He then had 6 more daughters later with young
Phebe Sexton who would die at 36. This huge 12 child family of Colonel John
(Trader) would bear dozens of children. The only brother of John (Trader)
was Colonel William (Judge) 1689-1741, who also had 5 children and had a
respectable gaggle of grandchildren including Thomas Ruggles I.

Imagine all the first and second cousins 5th generation Americans, running
and playing snowball at Christmastide anywhere around 1760-- cousins who
had 17 uncles and aunts. Cousins whose names included Lois, George, Peter,
Erastus and Losis, little Bathshua, Nathaniel, Walter, Thomas Ruggles,
Catherine, as well as the tragic little cousins who wouldn't live long,
Polly and Mary who both died at 1... Uncles who were in occupations and
descriptions as vast as MD, Captain, Brigadier General, Clothier, Colonel,
Major, Tory, even two unmarried twins. This is where they are 5th and 6th
generation first, second and third cousins, some rugged and playing
military games, others probably wearing lace and having bowl haircuts.

They probably felt secure in their world where there was a street named for
their family, whose Judge and Counselmen had been Pynchons, the grocery
store is Pynchon & Co, the financial institutions in the town being
Pynchon, and bits and pieces of their land had not yet begun to distribute
and divide. In the 1820's as Joseph C is growing up, I'm sure he's acutely
aware of the evidence and artifacts of his place in New England history,
old toys of his grandfather's times, a glass pitcher hand blown by colonial
settlers, saved somehow despite it's age. Across town in another home a
large cabinet with many drawers, a desk that would enclose mysteries and
have a life of it's own.

>From this point I'm enumerating the Meritorious Price William as the 1st
generation.

Here is how George Mallory Pynchon Jr, and Thomas Ruggles Pynchon IV are
related cousins & 10th generation Americans. George Mallory Jr's father was
a Stock broker in New York. His grandfather was Daniel P the grocer. TRP
IV's father WHC Pynchon. His grandfather was William Lyon Pynchon 1832, a
Union Collge Graduate.

Their great great grandfathers were age-staggered second cousins, Thomas
1760-(the TRP line) and William 1740-(The GMP line) Their great great great
grandfathers were vastly age staggered (because of the 2 wives) first
cousins William 1703-(GMP line and also the father of the Joseph C who
wrote the Tract on Stearns) and Joseph 1737- the Tory (TRP line) Their
great great great great grandfathers were brothers John (Trader) 1674-(GMP
line) and William (Judge) 1689- (TRP line)

whew!
la la la everyone sing!

So we know this Charles 1788-1860-who-died in MA, wrote in 1857 The
facts in relation to Charles Stearns' claim on the government ... is named
Stearns but I honestly will not connect the exact dot and confirm whether
he is the son Charles of Elijah
http://www.nh.searchroots.com/HillsboroughCo/Merrimack/familytrees1B.html
(who died drowned in the Merrimack River)& Eunice (Wells) Stearns of
Watertown making him related to Charlotte, as I am away from my good tools
and I have a waning vivaciousness about, the Stearns stuff, making this an
inconclusive breadcrumb trail. So I apologize but at least Charlotte is
related to the Isaac Stearns who came over on the Arabella in 1630 and
landed in Salem MA. An [unseen] bio on Charles Stearns 1788-1860 would be
desirable if someone cares to hook in to ancestry for this guy at your
local library if they have it.
