Also see (my translation):
Podpol'niki - a sect which appeared in the village Sinyen'kie of Saratov
uyezd (district). Its followers call themselves 'hididing Christians'; they
do not recognise the Orthodox church with its teachings and rituals, but
only the pre-Nikon church. Podpol'niki do not stay at their homes, but run
away without passports to strannopriimtsy (hospitable hosts) who share some
of their views. These hosts have under-floor cellars (podpolya, pl. from
podpolye) with secret entrances and exits where they allocate the fleeing
Christians. Podpol'niki lead a most severe anchoretic life, do not recognise
matrimony and co-habitation with women in general, however they do not
mutilate themselves like skoptsy do. Podpol'niki bury their dead at night in
secret places; hence the rumours that they drop the deceased into the river
Volga.
