This is a romantic recurring theme of the American experience.
When offered a job as an over-the-road trucker on a Boston to Oakland route,
I jumped at the chance.
I drove across the continent 13 times in 11 months. I was not a tourist, I
was a worker. I saw America in a way that few people know or understand who
have not done this. I fell in love with it. I got drunk and almost killed in
cowboy bars in Utah. I found all-you-can-eat BBQ joints in Arkansas. I
learned never to eat pizza in Oklahoma.
Most importantly, I fell in love with the grandeur of the open spaces.
