It would be interesting to know whether there were also great numbers
of young people on the road in years just after WWII and the Korean
War. Robert Penn Warren's "All the King's Men," from 1946, features
an impulsive, solo road trip across the country; and in Ken Kesey's
"Sometimes a Great Notion," set in the 50's, Hank Stamper reminisces
about rambling across the country on his motorcycle after coming home
from Korea.
