Here, too. I was born in Texas in 1949, father from Maine and mother from
OKC/Chicago. They were then moderate Republicans, got semi-active for
Eisenhower in 1952... and found themselves pushed left (and eventually out)
by ferociously isolationist, McCarthyite Republicans for Taft.
 
That was a minority brawl in overwhelmingly Dem Texas at the time, and we
moved North in 1956, but the incident had prefgured what was coming when the
Nixon southern strategy paid off.
 
Even though my parents were sometimes "too close to the middle for me," they
retained a rueful/horrified fascination with the politics of a state where
they'd been made to feel like radical lefties -- and they introduced me to
Molly Ivins, whom we all admired for her writing's sheer in-your-face
exuberance.
