Brian, Jules, and Thomas

My favorite scene so far: while Brian is working on the Smile recordings,
his friend Jules Siegel brings Thomas Pynchon over to meet him. Brian gets
scared when he learns that Pynchon is an east coast intellectual. As they
sit in the Arabian tent that Brian had installed in his living room,
Pynchon, not much of a talker, sits "in stunned, unhappy silence" as he
observes Brian repeatedly kicking over the oil lamp he is nervously
attempting to light. Poor Brian!
