Yes, I see him this way too...he is one of Pynchon's 'good' guys....good-hearted but clueless early on....
Does anyone see him as Pynchon-like?...The observant writer-type trying to make sense of it all...feeling lost....in this case 'guilty' as well, as if he has 'inherited' the guilt...

I'm struck by the Kafkaesque way in which he's mysteriously had everyone turn against him due to his "sin," and how he's gotten swept along by circumstantial events up to this point. He seems to be pretty clueless as to the meaning of things, but notices things (the strangeness of his situation at the Hotel, his "arrangement" with Drave, his employment at WCI, etc.). To me, he's kinda that "typical" Pynchon character (if there is such a beast) who is a schlep that gets caught up in something bigger than he can imagine, thus fascilitating the paranoia.
