1) full name is Lewis (p38, line 8 "Never more, Lewis...."

2) according to Crowley (not sure where, maybe one of the Little Essays
toward Truth?) a Lewis is the son of a master Mason

3) p37, line 23 - "He became known as the Upstate-Downstate Beast"

Now color me Pynchomane, but I'm reminded of flip-flop in V.
Up-state & down-state - binary - bipolar - Jekyll/Hyde? This also fits
with the strong impression I got of his being co-present with Deuce...
and, osmotically by the laws of fiction, of Deuce's terrible crimes
being part and parcel of Lew's mysterious transgression...they both
partaking in different ways (along with Cyprian, and Oedipa Maas) of
the archetype "detective" or "secret agents"

4) he left a note at work (p37,l35) suggesting he'd be back shortly - this
was after he'd visited the various healers (cf Vineland's Dr Larry
scenes, n'est ca pas, also later in the registration form at the hotel) -
and also at home, left a "breezy" (38, 4) note that prompted his wife to
ride the interurban into Chicago, thinking to fetch him back - ie, toward
the narrowing of possibilities, as instanced by the cattle en masse but
also by the rejection/reflections she has en route)
