Here we have a return to "Youthful Folly," taken from the title of  
Hexagram 4 in the Wilhelm/Baynes translation of the _I Ching_ (Merle  
is ready for a 'change') and mentioned three times in Gravity's Rainbow:

Pirate's mark of Youthful Folly growing in an unmistakable Mongoloid  
point, right out of the middle of his head (12-13)
