Ya Sam:

Nor "The Fuller's Earth Man." (Obsolete USAan idiom: The Fuller Brush Man, a
door-to-door salesman from the Fuller company, was iconic in the
1920s-1940s)

A period reference:

Both diatomaceous earth (silica, from lake or oceanioc diatoms) and fuller's
earth (usually montmorillonite clay) work as they do because their countless
small particles provide a huge surface area for liquids and oils to adhere
to.

And make of this what you will:

"Fuller's earth... also finds use in special effects when simulating
explosions. Fine-grained fuller's earth makes a much larger plume than
ordinary dirt, suggesting a larger explosion and allowing a smaller, safer
charge to be used." (Wikipedia)
