Yeah, mea culpa, should be 'reviewers writing in German' or something like 
that. And, I heard that Austrian German was a bit different from German 
proper (High German?) as well.

BTW, now looking at all those reviews it is pretty understandable why a 
German minister is a good acquaintance of Pynchon's, the Germans are the 
most Pynchonised European nation, no doubt 'bout that.
