Michael Naumann was a leading employee of the Rowohlt Verlag, the publisher
of all of Pynchon's works in Germany. In the nineties he lived for several
years in New York to manage the american activities of his company - and I
think 'acquaintance' is right, because some of the members of Rowohlt tried to
use their connections and - sometimes successfully - arranged meetings with
their author. One of Naumanns successors, Nico Hansen, travels regularly through
Germany talking about his friendship with P., how familiar they were with
each other and the like - embarrassing. Naumann later became the first minister
of cultural affairs in germany, after two years he was dismissed, and he is
now editor of the magazine "Zeit", together with the former german chancellor
Schmidt.
