Cryptonomicon

Most of us, myself included, don't really run across books that are 3's and lower, the same way we rarely see movies that are genuinely bad. We know the pedigree of the books that we read, or we've heard something good about them.
Ratings are what are odious, not comparisons. I hate to admit to having known guys who rate women 1-10, usually by "looks," and even then often by looks that don't even take into account a mean, unpleasant face. Such guys have usually pointed to average looking women and rated them as 2's or 3's, forgetting that there are people in this world who are genuinely "ugly" in their looks, and that those people must occupy the lower numbers. So it is with books... I've told the above-mentioned guys that a "wouldn't on a desert island even after five years; Wilson would look better" to "give up everything I have for" rating system would make more sense.
The content of Cryptonomicon was worth the reading the pedestrian, i.e average, i.e. 5, not even slightly painful unless you're allergic, i.e. 3, writing.
