CD sales dive into toilet, end of musical civilization

Well, only if you're trying to make traditional sounding rock music...
And that's certainly not all recording is "supposed to be". Yes of
course, a kitchen or bedroom or wherever is not the best place to record
a drum kit if you want a pretty polished sound, but that's not to say
that some brilliant music hasn't been made by doing so. Sometimes
limiting yourself, not surrounding yourself in a glut of equipment, can
inspire resourcefulness and experimentation and lead to great results.
If you just have one piece of software or analog equipment but you know
that instrument inside out, everything that's possible with it, you're
in a much better place to create something decent than if you have all
kinds of expensive stuff, most of which you only half-use. Let's not
forget, there's still some absolutely killer stuff still recorded to
cassette on an 8-track. Plus pretty much all electronic music.....

The home studio thing is not all it's cracked up to be. I'm sitting here
next to a Yamaha O2R96 board, Genelec and Signet monitors, all kinds of
eq and noise reduction, digital storage, QBase and ProTools, mic
preamps, and a shitload of assorted high-end mics. My roommate, drummer,
and bass player are all audio engineers. I wouldn't dream of recording
drums or electric guitars here. It would sound like shit. Most so-called
home studios consist of a computer with Garageband and a couple of
SM58's. Remember what recording is supposed to be - creating an accurate
record of a performance. Home recording is of limited value even in
professional hands.
