I'm reminded of Paul McCartney's comments on the
"White Album"---it might be a big sprawling mess,
but it's the White Album, dammit. And as expansive
as AtD might be, the plot-lines do gather up, the
stories' collusions do form a recognizable shape
and like every other book TRP has cooked up,
it's meant to be read more than once. AtD's not
"Night at the Apollo", it's more like "Ring of the Niebulungen",
(though Parsifal's closer to the mark---everyone in
"Against the Day" seems to be on a mythic
quest of some sort). If that's not your cup of tea,
read something else. If you don't have the attention span
for this sort of thing, there's a mountain of other---shorter---
books in the Library of Babel.
