I had far fewer instances of getting lost in the shuffle
in AtD than I did in first readings of his other big novels.

I say ditto. On a second reading, more lines single up,
but on a first reading there's a chiffhangerish aspect 
to the whole thing that pulls you along even if you
feel momentarily lost. That doesn't kick in in GR till
you're well underway and never seems to happen
in the sweet (but sometimes slack) M&D. Of course,
the cliffhanger is the defining dramatic trope of the
silent film era.
