I had a fantasy, years ago, of "The 49 Steps"---
conflating John Buchan's "The 39 Steps" with
Pynchon and Harry Parch:

"Partch is famous for his 43-tone scale, even
though he used many different scales in his
work and the number of divisions is theoretically infinite."

I will look for a copy of "The 49 Steps". Knowing
there's a Talmudic aspect as well only
deepens the mystery. Seven squared would
doubtless have many numerological implications.
